Merdingen

The wine village of Merdingen lies in a quiet and peaceful location on the steep western edge of the Tuniberg.

Characterised by its historical past, the village is still distinguished by its baroque townscape with many half-timbered houses, fountains and one of the most beautiful parish churches in South Baden.
It was not without reason that Merdingen was awarded the gold medal of the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Federal Republic of Germany in 1989 for its well-kept townscape.

But it is not only the centre of Merdingen that is worth a visit, the idyllic countryside with views of the vines also invites you to take an extensive walk or a cycle tour through nature.

Highlights in Merdingen's calendar of events are the large carnival procession with its 100 or so groups, which attracts numerous spectators every year, and the traditional Gassenweinfest, where Merdingen presents its top wines and delicious food.

St. Remigius Church

From 1738 to 1741, the famous master builder Johann Caspar Bagnato built the late Baroque parish church of St. Remigius in Merdingen on behalf of the Teutonic Order of Freiburg. It was decorated by Francesco Pozzi (stucco), Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer (altar and pulpit) and Franz Joseph Spiegler (ceiling frescoes and altar leaves). Above the main portal, in a niche, there is a larger-than-life sculpture of an Immaculata by Johann Christian Wentzinger, who had relatives in Merdingen. The church has been renovated several times, mostly in keeping with the "spirit of the times". After extensive renovation, it can now be visited again in its original state.

Roman wellness on the Tuniberg

In Merdingen there are still traces of a Roman estate from the 1st century AD. The baths were equipped with all the achievements of Roman civilisation. There was both a cold and a hot water tub. The bath was heated with the usual Roman underfloor heating.
The remains of the baths were discovered before the Second World War. In 1977-78, the site was examined more closely and a bath was recognised. To protect the excavation, a roof was built over it in 1980.
The bath can be reached on foot and by bicycle from Merdingen. On the way, the Bettelbrünnle invites you to linger and have a barbecue.
